SPAM CUP 2021

Traditionally the SPAM Cup recognizes the team that shows up big, competes hard and embodies the spirit of what YYC Tech Gives is all about. While we are not having the traditional Spam Cup event this year, we will be awarding the coveted trophy to the team who shows up ‘the biggest’. It’s not about who raises the most food, funds, or time, but rather who comes together in a big way across all the pillars of giving. We are looking for the most creative ways to support the Food Bank and that really go above and beyond to engage staff and the community to make a difference.

From now until December 13 you have the opportunity to raise as much time (volunteer hours), food (Baby food and formula) and money as you can in support of the Calgary Food Bank. Then on December 16, we will come together (in a yet to be determined format) to announce who this year’s award winners are as we present the YYC Tech Gives Fundraising total.

2021 changes

SPAM Cup 2021 will stretch across The Calgary Food Bank’s Three pillars of giving: Time, Money, and Food from Tuesday, November 9 through Friday, December 13.

In focusing on these three pillars, YYC Tech Gives participants will be scored on a points system that will offer points that correspond with each initiative, and the SPAM cup will be awarded on December 16 to the Company that scores the highest overall points.  In addition to the overall winner receiving the SPAM Cup, we also award the traditional Heavy Lifter Award with a different spin, and a new award this year, The Golden Clock Award.

The awards

The Golden Clock award will be given to the team that can accumulate the most volunteer hours from now until December 13.  The community has been incredibly generous with their donation of food throughout the pandemic, but the Food Bank’s need to limit the number of people on each volunteer shift to ensure social distancing has impacted the speed at which they can sort the food donations they have received. They have created additional volunteer shifts to help accommodate for this, which in turn has put a greater demand on volunteer numbers. This year we are hoping to engage you, your colleges, your friends, and family to help support the Calgary Food Bank with the gift of time. Whether you come down alone, bring a group from your office, or engage your family and friends to support- when you sign up and mark them as YYC Tech Gives volunteers and track all the hours towards your team. To sign up to volunteer please visit our website or reach out to our volunteer resource team by email if you have any questions.

Please select one member for your team to track your volunteer hours and send them to Morissa Villeneuve at the Calgary Food Bank by end of day on December 13.

In previous years The Heavy Lifter Award has gone to the team who created the most holiday content at the Spam Cup event. This year we would like to change it but still offer the coveted award to the team that can accumulate the largest weight of food… but here's the catch.

This year all companies will be asked to collect the same food item. From now until December 13 we challenge you and your team to see how much baby food, formula, and diapers you can collect. All donations need to be dropped off on December 13 at the Calgary Food Bank Annex* between 9 am – 5 pm.  Load up a truck, convoy as a team, or have your teammates drop off donations throughout the day. Just make sure all your donations are in when the clock strikes 5.

*Calgary Food Bank Annex is located at 5020 12a street SE – just across from the main warehouse.
